Tips to Successful Search Engine Optimization (SEO):

Choose and use keywords

Keywords are used by customers to find your site via a search engine. Most popular is Google, followed by Yahoo! and Microsoft’s Bing.   The idea is to optimize your page for these words or phrases. You should choose keywords that accurately reflect your business, your products and services, that is, what your website is all about. The keywords should be specific enough but not too broad either.  Think of your target customers.

One approach often used by successful internet marketers is to pick different keywords for different webpages. If your business name is well known, it can be used as a keyword for the ‘About Us’ page. However, bear in mind that most often, customers will be searching for your products and/or services, and not your name. For help with keywords, Google has an site for AdWords. Search for terms to find out what works on the competitors’ sites.

The web site’s keywords should appear in each of the pages’ meta titles. The meta title appears at the very top of the browser window, above the menu bar. The keywords should appear regularly throughout the opening Web page, and it is important that they frequently appear in the starting paragraphs.

However, resist the temptation to overuse keywords called keyword stuffing. ‘The search engines can spot it and will reduce your page ranking.  A SEO golden rule is: never sacrifice quality of content for keyword placement as this could affect your page ranking.

Submit website to the search engines

Submit your website to the search engines to make sure it is indexed by them.  If your site has inbound links, the web spiders, which crawl  the internet, will find it automatically. Web spiders also update a search engine’s site database.

Build up the links from other sites

Search engines view inbound links as a vote for your site. Therefore, the more incoming links, the higher your webpage will rank. However,  make sure that the search engines view the linking sites as quality addresses, otherwise, unrelated site links to your site can harm your rankings. You should offer to exchange links with sites related to your business. Likewise, try as much as possible to remove your site links to other unrelated sites. To pull up a list of sites that link to yours, use a search engine to check this by simply typing your sitename in the search box.

Test keywords with pay-per-click advertising

Google’s AdSense and other pay-per-click (ppc) advertising programs are tests for keyword effectiveness. They provide statistics if your keywords will bring good traffic to your website or not. You can also see if your keywords target paying customers.  Sometimes, pay-per-click can be expensive, but if used correctly, it will bring customers to your web site to your advantage.
